Minack Theatre: Box Office & Reception Desk
Minack Theatre, Porthcurno
A world famous cultural landmark
Minack Theatre is the world’s most dramatic open-air theatre. Carved into the granite bedrock of a coastal cliff and fully exposed to the elements, it truly is a performance space unlike any other. It’s the jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s vibrant arts scene, so we were honoured when they approached us to do some bespoke design, manufacture & install work for them.
A practical solution for a busy team
The team at Minack needed a reception desk that was practical, durable, and that matched the existing style of the reception area. We consulted with the staff members who explained that they needed a desk that would act as an information point, box office and welcoming centrepiece to this unique site. We repositioned the desk slightly, adding multiple levels, soft-close keyboard trays and adjustable shelving to the staff-facing side, while on the visitor-facing side, we went for a clean ash & stone finish.
A durable and elegant focal point
The choice of material for the countertop was incredibly important. More than 230,000 tourists and theatregoers visit the site every year, so Minack needed a countertop that could sustain the natural wear and tear of literally hundreds of thousands of hands, keys, handbags and wallets. We chose Kerrock, an acrylic composite material, to achieve the look and durability of granite without the high expense and physical constraints of cut stone.
What was meant to be a simple update job has become one of our proudest pieces. The front desk at the Minack Theatre is a stylish focal point, packed with practical features and strong enough to welcome many millions more visitors in the years to come.
