The Gym Project: Full Fit Out

Gym Project, Falmouth

Sometimes, we just fall in love with a new business concept. When Stuart Watt of Hooperberg Creative came to us on behalf of Sam and Matt at The Gym Project and showed us the drawings of what their new venture was all about, we couldn’t not get involved! Even before speaking to Sam and Matt, we could tell this was going to be a fitness space like no other in Cornwall.

A daring and ambitious office conversion

Stuart’s ambitious and clever design gave us the roadmap we needed to turn a mundane business park unit on the outskirts of Falmouth into a vibrant one-of-a-kind gym with plenty of personality. Before we arrived, the premises was a dark and drab office pool, boxed in with suspended ceilings, cheap partition walls and other office detritus. Sam and Matt singlehandedly gutted the space, leaving RRW free to start work with an empty, open canvas.

A complex build requiring wet & dry installation work

Our first task was to form the area for the washrooms. To allow for plumbing works, we installed a raised floor, and used metal studwork for the walls, which allowed for the first fix of the M&E works to be completed. At the same time, we managed the dot and dab dry lining, with full skim coats, for all perimeter walls so that they were ready for decorating. To keep the neighbours happy, we installed acoustic insulation with false walls on both gable ends..

The washrooms, mainly clad with Knauf Aquapanel, were then finished with porcelain subway tiles. We also installed a bespoke shower tray, and fitted some polished concrete hand basins. We created a feature wall with vinyl cut graphics and simple birch ply, continuing the bold style through to the scaffold pipe seating. In the main exercise area, we installed a zoned mix of rubber matting, painted concrete and astro turf. Overhead, the exposed and polished air conditioning ducts finished off Sam & Matt’s vibrant industrial look.

A home-grown Cornish success story

The Gym Project is another excellent example of a world-class business in the heart of Cornwall — we were delighted to be a part of it.
